Ronny Chieng Becomes U.S. Citizen — But Did He Quietly Renounce Malaysia?

Ronny Chieng is now a U.S. citizen, as announced during The Daily Show taping with Bill Murray. But what happens to his Malaysian citizenship?

Ronny Chieng Is Now American — But What About Malaysia?

Comedian and The Daily Show host Ronny Chieng has officially become a U.S. citizen, and the moment was anything but ordinary.

Instead of making the announcement through a formal press release, Chieng’s new status was revealed live during a taping of The Daily Show — with none other than Bill Murray breaking the news.

“They said you’re very excited today because today you just found out that you have become an American citizen,” Murray told the crowd before giving Chieng a warm hug.

A Surreal Timing — And a Big Reveal

Chieng was hosting the show that night, with Murray as his scheduled guest. After the surprise announcement, Chieng confirmed it himself.

“Yes, I became a U.S. citizen today,” he said. “It’s a crazy experience… It’s been a long day.”

He also shared that the naturalisation process was “intense and unexpectedly difficult.”

“They ask you like a hundred questions — stuff none of you would know,” he joked, referencing U.S. history and civics knowledge required to pass.

But Did He Renounce His Malaysian Citizenship?

Here’s where things get sensitive — especially for Malaysian fans.

While Chieng hasn’t publicly addressed renouncing his Malaysian citizenship, it’s well known that Malaysia does not allow dual citizenship. And the U.S. naturalisation process typically requires giving up one’s previous nationality.

Some fans celebrated Chieng’s achievement, calling it inspirational. Others, however, raised questions about identity and loyalty, wondering if this move meant a quiet farewell to his Malaysian roots.

Global Citizen — or Identity Shift?

Chieng, who rose to fame partly by poking fun at American culture, is now officially part of it. Whether this marks a permanent shift in his national identity — or just an expansion of his global platform — remains to be seen.

In the end, the question lingers:

Can you ever truly leave behind the country that shaped you?
