Semporna Lobster Vendor Caught Scamming Chinese Tourist
Semporna Lobster Vendor Caught Scamming Chinese Tourist, Sparks Outrage
A viral video of a Chinese tourist being scammed by lobster sellers in Semporna has triggered backlash from Malaysians — especially Sabahans who feel their state’s reputation is being tarnished.
Claimed Her Money Was Fake
According to the tourist, the incident occurred when she tried to pay for lobsters using cash freshly withdrawn from a nearby ATM. However, the sellers initially refused to accept the cash, claiming it looked fake.
While inspecting the banknotes, one of the young male workers quietly swapped the lobster in her plastic bag with smaller-sized prawns. Only after that did they “confirm” the money was valid and handed her the original lobster.
Tourist Snatched Back Her Money
Realising the deception, the tourist snatched back her money and called out the scam. The situation turned tense as the vendors began mocking and laughing at her.
The entire incident was caught on video and quickly spread across social media, sparking strong reactions from Malaysians online.
Netizens Slam Dishonesty, Demand Action
Many netizens expressed disgust at the vendor’s actions, calling it a disgrace to Malaysia’s image. Some even urged authorities to investigate and take action against the stall operators.
One Sabahan netizen commented angrily, “They’re an embarrassment to Sabah. I myself avoid going to Semporna because of so many scammers.”
Others warned that if this continues, tourists may begin avoiding Semporna altogether, affecting the local economy.
Locals Say Foreign Vendors Are Increasing
Another concerning issue raised was the presence of undocumented vendors operating freely in the area. Some netizens alleged that many of these stalls are run by foreigners, making regulation even harder.
The overarching message from locals and netizens is clear — honesty is essential, especially in the tourism industry. One wrong move can damage the trust that takes years to build.
