The highly anticipated EDM event, Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP) 2024, took an unsettling turn when over 400 Malaysians attending the festival accused Indonesian police officers of extorting them.

Held from December 13 to 15, 2024, the three-day festival in Jakarta was supposed to be an unforgettable experience. Instead, it has become the subject of intense scrutiny after festivalgoers, including Malaysians, claimed to have faced shocking treatment from local authorities.

Social media platforms were flooded with stories of Malaysians alleging that they were extorted during random detentions at the event, sparking protests and outrage online.

Massive Extortion: RM9 Million Allegedly Collected

In a tweet shared by user @Twt_Rave, it was revealed that more than 400 Malaysians were reportedly victims of extortion, with Indonesian police allegedly collecting a staggering RM9 million (32 billion Indonesian Rupiah).

Victims shared their harrowing experiences of being detained for several hours, with some waiting outside their hotels after checking out, only to be escorted to police stations. Several attendees were even left stranded, missing their return flights as a result of the police’s actions.

Shocking Amounts Demanded: Up to RM200,000 per Person

The most disturbing part of the ordeal was the reported extortion amounts. Detainees allegedly had to pay anywhere between RM11,000 and RM200,000 each. The eye-watering sums have left many festivalgoers shocked and furious, with social media abuzz with calls for accountability.

Event Organizers Respond: Investigation Underway

The organizers of DWP 2024, Ismaya Live, have since issued a statement expressing regret over the ordeal faced by attendees. They acknowledged the frustration and obstacles experienced but emphasized that the issue was beyond their control.

“We hear your concerns and are deeply sorry for the obstacles and frustration experienced,” said Ismaya Live in a statement on December 18. The organizers assured that the incident would be thoroughly investigated by the authorities, stressing that appropriate measures would be taken to prevent future occurrences.
