South Korean Singer Wheesung Passes Away, Found Unresponsive at Home

The South Korean entertainment industry is mourning the loss of Wheesung, a renowned R&B singer who dominated the music scene in the 2000s. The tragic news was confirmed on Monday, 10 March, after Wheesung, whose real name is Choi Whee-sung, was found unresponsive at his residence in Seoul’s Gwangjin District.
Authorities reported that it was Wheesung’s mother who discovered him and immediately contacted emergency responders. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after. While the cause of death remains undetermined, police have ruled out foul play, suggesting no suspicious circumstances at the scene.
His agency, Tajoy Entertainment, confirmed his passing in an official statement. “Wheesung has left us. He was found suffering from cardiac arrest at his residence and was later pronounced dead. Our staff and colleagues are in deep sorrow,” the company expressed.
Wheesung first rose to fame following his debut in 2002, delivering memorable hits such as “With Me,” “Insomnia,” and “Even Thought of Marriage.” Known for his powerful voice and emotional performances, Wheesung became a prominent figure in South Korea’s R&B genre.
However, his career faced a major setback in 2021 when he was convicted of habitual propofol use and sentenced to a year in prison. Despite this, Wheesung had been working to revive his career, with plans to perform alongside singer KCM in an upcoming concert in Daegu on Saturday, 15 March.
His final Instagram post, shared just five days before his death, hinted at his excitement for the performance. “I’ve finished my diet. Let’s meet on 15 March,” he had written, leaving fans shocked and saddened by the heartbreaking turn of events.
