The MADANI Government announces a huge toll discount for Raya, but netizens aren’t happy with the short duration.
The MADANI Government has made a surprising announcement by agreeing to offer a 50% toll discount for two days in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration this year. Minister of Works, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, in his recent press conference, revealed that the discount will start at 12:01 AM on March 28 (Friday) and end at 11:59 PM on March 29 (Saturday). He further explained that this initiative is aimed at giving the public an opportunity to plan their travels more smoothly and safely without rushing.
This toll discount will have a financial impact of RM19.69 million, which will be paid by the government to the concession companies involved. However, the discount is only available to private vehicles (Class 1) and covers almost all toll plazas, except for the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) toll plaza on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and the Tanjung Kupang toll plaza on the Second Malaysia-Singapore Link (Linkedua). While this move is considered a helpful initiative to lighten the public’s financial burden, many netizens have sarcastically pointed out that the two-day discount period is too short to significantly reduce the traffic congestion during the festive season.
Datuk Seri Alexander also reminded highway users to check their eWallet and Touch & Go card balances, as well as refer to the travel schedules provided by the highway concession companies to avoid congestion. He also suggested that the public use the CCTV links provided by the Malaysian Highway Authority to help plan their travels better during this period.
