TikTok Summoned Over PK Battle Trend Making Students Skip School & Spend on Virtual Gifts

TikTok to Face Questions Over Viral PK Battle Trend Affecting Students

The Malaysian Ministry of Communications has confirmed that TikTok will be summoned to provide clarification regarding the Player Knockout (PK) Battle trend, which has become increasingly controversial for its alleged negative impact on school-going children.

According to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, the ministry received concerns from parents over how the trend is distracting students from education and encouraging financial misuse.

“Instructions were issued this morning, and I expect that perhaps this week, they (TikTok) will come in for a discussion,” Fahmi said.

What Is the PK Battle Trend?

The PK Battle is a TikTok feature where two streamers compete in a timed showdown, urging viewers to send them digital gifts. The person who receives the most gifts wins the battle, while the loser typically faces humiliating punishments — such as pouring water over themselves, wiping flour on their face, or even running outdoors at night.

This seemingly harmless virtual game has spiralled into a dangerous obsession among Malaysian youth.

Reports have emerged of students skipping school and spending their daily allowances to purchase virtual gifts in support of their favourite creators.

Government Alarmed Over Children’s Access to Social Media

Datuk Fahmi noted that the situation reflects a deeper issue — underage access to social media platforms. According to existing policies, children under 13 are not permitted to have accounts on TikTok, Instagram, or similar platforms.

“This is why the government insists that children under 13 should not be on TikTok or any other social media platform,” he added.

The PK Battle trend, while engaging and entertaining for some, is now under scrutiny for potentially manipulating vulnerable users, particularly young students, into unhealthy digital habits and reckless spending.

A Call for Stricter Platform Regulation and Parental Awareness

This incident has reignited debates about parental monitoring, platform accountability, and the role of algorithms in promoting addictive online content.

As TikTok faces mounting pressure to address these issues, many are calling for the platform to implement stronger restrictions on monetised interactions and ensure age verification systems are effective.

Parents are also urged to stay vigilant about their children’s digital activities and be proactive in guiding them towards responsible online behaviour.
