“Tourists Demand Refunds After Discovering ‘Whale Shark’ in Chinese Aquarium is Just a Robot!”

Visitors at Xiaomeisha Ocean World in Shenzhen, China, were left stunned and furious when they discovered that the much-anticipated “whale shark” in the aquarium was not a real sea creature, but a mechanical replica. The aquarium, which opened on October 1st, had promised an incredible experience, with adult tickets priced at 240 yuan (around RM147) and children’s tickets at 150 yuan (around RM92) for access to the star attraction.

However, upon closer inspection, the “whale shark” gliding in the water was revealed to be a robot. The mechanical shark, despite its advanced engineering, moved unnaturally and was easily recognizable by its square-shaped head and artificial joints. Visitors were shocked to find out that what they thought was a majestic live creature was, in fact, a high-tech imposter.

Many tourists began to shout, “Refund the tickets!” as they felt deceived, given the high entry fees. In response, the aquarium stated that the use of a robot whale shark was not meant to mislead visitors but was a necessity due to laws prohibiting the trade of live whale sharks. They explained that they had invested millions in the creation of this mechanical version to offer an alternative experience, even though it fell short of many people’s expectations.

Despite this explanation, online backlash has been swift. Many netizens criticized the aquarium for charging high prices for a robotic experience and questioned whether it was right to display such replicas at all. Comments poured in, with some users suggesting that for the ticket price, they would rather visit a Science and Technology Museum instead of the aquarium, which they felt had fallen short on the promised experience.

The situation has sparked a debate over the ethics of keeping marine animals in captivity and the transparency of the aquarium in explaining the limitations of the attraction. While the aquarium continues to defend its decision, the disappointment of the visitors remains clear.
