Donald Trump May Visit Malaysia This October for ASEAN Summit

Trump May Attend 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur

US President Donald Trump may be making a diplomatic trip to Malaysia this October for the 47th ASEAN Summit, an event set to gather regional leaders and key international partners.

During a recent media briefing at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the possibility of Trump attending the summit is on the table.

“It’s possible, yes,” said Rubio, adding that they were working on setting a date for the ASEAN–US Special Summit.

US–ASEAN Ties Under the Spotlight

Rubio’s visit to Malaysia began on 10 July, where he was welcomed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. During his trip, Rubio also met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar described the meeting as “beneficial,” noting that the US expressed interest in reviewing trade tariffs and enhancing its partnership with Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.

As part of the diplomatic exchange, Anwar formally invited Trump to attend the ASEAN Summit through Rubio, a move that signals Malaysia’s intent to strengthen multilateral relations with the US under its ASEAN chairmanship.

A Strategic Diplomatic Gesture

This follows Malaysia’s earlier outreach to the US government. Back in May, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan revealed that Anwar had written to the White House to propose the ASEAN–US Special Summit be held this year.

“We are waiting for a response from the US, and hopefully we will receive good news,” said Mohamad Hasan.

Rubio’s appearance in Kuala Lumpur comes just weeks after Trump’s latest announcement regarding new US tariffs. His visit is widely interpreted as part of Washington’s effort to reaffirm its foreign policy focus in the Asia-Pacific region.

Should Trump confirm attendance, it would mark a notable diplomatic development for Malaysia and the broader ASEAN bloc, especially amid growing geopolitical tensions and economic recalibrations worldwide.
