A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight heading to Kuala Lumpur from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, had to make an emergency landing due to an engine issue.

Flight MH199, with 131 passengers and seven crew members on board, took off at 12.45am today, 20 June, but had to return to Hyderabad airport when sparks started flying from the plane’s right engine.

According to Business Standard, an English-language newspaper in India, the MAS flight reached a maximum altitude of 29,000 feet before descending to 19,000 feet. It further lowered to 7,200 feet, maintaining that altitude until the final 15 minutes before landing back at Hyderabad airport.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-800.

MAS has yet to release an official statement

However, a MAS representative told The Hindu that the plane experienced engine failure shortly after takeoff and returned to Hyderabad airport.

“We are assisting the passengers at the airport. Accommodation has been provided at a hotel, although some passengers from Hyderabad chose to return home. We are working to arrange an alternative flight by this evening,” the MAS representative said, as quoted by the Indian newspaper.

A passenger shared a short video of the incident on X, formerly known as Twitter:
