A social media influencer was charged in George Town Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing her ex-boyfriend’s phone in April.

On June 13, Sarah Leo Ee May, a 33-year-old influencer with 20,000 Instagram followers, pleaded not guilty to the charge of theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code. The incident reportedly took place on April 26 around 10 p.m. in a car parked at Gleneagles Hospital, Penang. She is accused of stealing an OPPO Reno8 5G smartphone worth RM2,000 from 27-year-old Andrew Yeap Hue Bing.

If convicted, Sarah could face up to seven years in jail, a fine, or both. Represented by lawyer Cheah Eng Soon, she argued that the incident was a misunderstanding. Deputy public prosecutor S Preeya Darrsini requested a bail of RM7,000, while Sarah’s lawyer sought a lower amount, emphasizing it should not be punitive. The court set bail at RM3,000 with one surety and scheduled the next hearing for July 24.

After the court session, Sarah addressed the situation on Instagram Stories, clarifying that the person involved was not her ex-boyfriend. She expressed surprise at the media attention and thanked her family and husband for their support.

Sarah emphasized that she doesn’t seek trouble and that her lawyer is handling everything. She apologized for the public scrutiny and stated she wouldn’t provide further updates on the matter.
