Strong Quake Detected Early Monday Morning
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake Sabah incident was recorded at 12.57am on Monday, 23 February, after a strong tremor struck waters off the state.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the epicentre was located 49 kilometres west of Kudat at coordinates 7.0° north and 116.4° east, with a depth of 678 kilometres.
Despite the strength of the quake, authorities confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
Tremors Felt Across Multiple States
The tremors were felt across Sabah and extended to several areas in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
Following the incident, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre informed Bernama that no incidents had been reported.
“All stations are patrolling and monitoring their areas to ensure public safety and keep the situation under control,” it said.
Public Shares Experiences Online
After the quake, Malaysians took to social media to share their experiences and express relief that no major damage was reported.
“Everyone living on the 10th floor quickly ran downstairs, the earthquake was so strong. Ya Allah, protect us from bad things,” wrote one netizen while sharing a video of residents gathered in an open parking area.
Others also offered prayers, hoping Sabah would be spared from further disaster.
METMalaysia Continues Monitoring
METMalaysia confirmed it will continue monitoring the situation. The department has also urged members of the public who felt the tremors to complete a questionnaire via its Google Form link to assist in data collection.
At this time, authorities maintain that there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
