RM650 Million For Water Security! Google Plans Massive Project To Boost Water Supply And Reduce Flood Risks In Negeri Sembilan
Google has announced a RM650 million investment to develop water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan alongside its upcoming data centre. The project includes a reservoir and treatment plant capable of supplying 65 million litres of treated water daily. Beyond supporting Google’s operations, the facilities aim to strengthen public water supply, manage excess rainfall and reduce flood risks in surrounding communities.
Why Is Google Spending RM650 Million On Water Infrastructure In Malaysia?
Google has announced a US$160 million investment, equivalent to approximately RM650 million, to develop shared water infrastructure in Negeri Sembilan. While the company is preparing to establish a data centre campus at Springhill Industrial Park in Port Dickson, the investment will also support the state’s public water supply. Working alongside the Negeri Sembilan State Government and SAINS, Google has appointed Gamuda Berhad to construct an off-river storage reservoir and a water treatment plant. Once completed, the facilities will be transferred to MBINS, a state-owned statutory body. The arrangement is intended to ensure that the infrastructure serves both Google’s operations and surrounding communities.
How Will The Project Help Residents With Water Supply And Flooding?
The proposed reservoir will be developed along the Linggi River, where it is designed to collect excess river water and rainfall during wetter periods. By storing surplus water, the facility aims to help reduce flood risks in surrounding flood-prone areas while maintaining reserves for drier conditions. Water collected in the reservoir will be channelled to a treatment plant capable of producing 65 million litres of safe drinking water daily. This supply will serve both the planned data centre and public users. However, the project is intended to reduce flood risks rather than eliminate flooding entirely, and its actual performance can only be assessed once the facilities become operational.
What Else Will Malaysians Gain From Google’s Expansion?
Beyond water infrastructure, Google has announced additional commitments involving electricity, renewable energy and workforce development. The company says it will cover the full electricity consumption costs of its planned data centre campus, including the direct infrastructure expenses required to connect the facility to the power grid. Google is also expanding its partnership with SOLS Foundation to introduce solar education programmes in participating government schools and digital skills training for young Malaysians pursuing clean energy careers. The initiatives are expected to begin in Negeri Sembilan in early 2027, including opportunities for youth from lower-income households and Orang Asli communities. Together, these programmes aim to create longer-term benefits beyond the construction of the data centre itself.
