Son Of KL Sinkhole Victim Returns To Site 1 Year Later To Offer Prayers

A year after one of Kuala Lumpur’s most shocking urban tragedies, the son of Vijaya Lakshmi, the Indian tourist who lost her life in a sinkhole, returned to the scene to offer prayers and pay tribute to his late mother.

A Tragedy That Stunned The Nation

On 23 August 2024, Vijaya Lakshmi, a 48-year-old tourist from India, fell victim to a sudden sinkhole that opened up on Jalan Masjid India, a busy street in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Despite a major search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies, her body was never recovered. After nine days of intense efforts, the operation was called off due to deteriorating ground conditions. Her grieving family returned home to Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh, on 1 September 2024.

Son Performs Thavasam Ritual at the Repaired Site

On 22 August 2025, just one day shy of the tragedy’s first anniversary, M Surya, the eldest son of Vijaya Lakshmi, returned to the very spot where the sinkhole had claimed his mother’s life.

According to a viral TikTok video, Surya performed a thavasam ritual, a Hindu tradition observed on the first death anniversary to honour the departed and seek peace for their soul.

The video showed him placing a framed photo of his mother, adorned with a flower garland, on the ground at the now-repaired sidewalk. Offerings including fruits, Indian sweets, and savoury dishes were neatly laid out on a banana leaf — a common ritual element in Hindu ceremonies.

Sharing Food in Her Honour: The Practice of Annadhanam

As part of the remembrance, Surya also carried out annadhanam, a Hindu act of giving food to others in memory of the deceased. The video captured him handing out free meals to people queuing nearby — a gesture that symbolises compassion, blessings, and the continuation of his mother’s spirit through good deeds.

According to the New Straits Times, Surya was accompanied by a relative during the solemn ceremony. There were no large crowds, just a quiet moment of remembrance — and a powerful one.

The Memory Still Lingers

The tragic event had gripped Malaysians last year, with many expressing condolences and shock at the unpredictable nature of the incident. Vijaya Lakshmi’s death was not only a personal loss to her family, but also a haunting reminder of how quickly life can change.

As Surya knelt to honour his mother, the quiet streets of Jalan Masjid India bore witness to a son’s undying love — and the painful weight of unanswered questions.
