Indoor Petting Zoo At Johor Bahru Mall Sparks Fresh Debate Over Animal Welfare

Viral Video Raises Concerns Over Animal Conditions

A TikTok video shared by user Joey (@joeydiaries_) has sparked discussions online after she documented her visit to an indoor petting zoo at Paradigm Mall in Johor Bahru. In the video, several animals, including a camel, a wallaby and a goat, were seen being housed in relatively small enclosures inside the shopping mall environment. Joey expressed concern about the animals being exposed to bright lighting, constant noise and large crowds of visitors throughout the day. One clip also appeared to show a meerkat repeatedly pacing within its enclosure, which she interpreted as a sign of distress.

Visitor Claims Animals Faced Constant Disturbance

According to Joey, some visitors interacted roughly with the animals while staff supervision appeared limited. She also claimed to have witnessed people disturbing leashed cats that were resting. In her view, the attraction was neither entertaining nor educational because the animals seemed to be subjected to continuous handling without sufficient opportunities to rest. Joey said she hoped such practices would eventually come to an end, describing the experience as upsetting to witness and raising concerns about the welfare of the animals involved.

Online Reactions Renew Ethical Debate

The video quickly attracted attention online, with many social media users questioning the need for indoor petting zoos and whether such attractions prioritise animal welfare. Some commenters suggested the matter should be reported to the relevant local authorities, while others expressed surprise that animals continue to be used for entertainment in such settings. The discussion also highlighted broader concerns surrounding petting zoos, with critics arguing that these attractions may encourage people to view animals as entertainment rather than living creatures deserving of care and respect. Despite the criticism, petting zoos remain a popular attraction and continue to draw large crowds in many locations.

This is honestly insane. Went to Paradigm Mall in JB and saw an indoor petting zoo… inside a SHOPPING MALL. Loud noise, bright lights, constant crowd and animals just stuck there in small enclosures. People are literally paying to go in and touch them. Kids grabbing, adults handling them roughly, no proper supervision from staff. Saw cats on leashes being disturbed, people picking up sleeping cats like they’re toys. This isn’t “cute” or “fun”. It’s stressful and concerning. These animals don’t get a break. No quiet, no safe space, just endless handling all day. So sad and honestly disgusting to witness.
