6 Schoolgirls Charged With Rioting After Viral Assault Of Form 1 Student
Six Students Plead Not Guilty
Six female students were charged at the Kota Kinabalu Court for Children today, 20 July, in connection with an incident outside a secondary school that went viral on social media. According to the New Straits Times, the accused, aged between 12 and 16, claimed trial before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus. They are accused of being part of an unlawful assembly that allegedly used violence to cause hurt to a 13-year-old female student.
Alleged Assault Happened Outside School
The alleged offence took place at about 8am on 22 May outside the school’s gate. They were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a maximum sentence of two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. The court fixed 9 September for pre-trial case management.
Bail Granted Pending Next Hearing
Each accused was granted bail of RM1,000, with RM500 to be deposited and one local surety, either their mother or father. The six are represented by Datuk Ram Singh and Prabjit Singh Gill, while deputy public prosecutor Arfa Anchal Khan Muhammad Munir Khan appeared for the prosecution. The case drew widespread attention after a video of the alleged bullying incident circulated on social media on 27 May.
