Brazilian football legend Roberto Carlos has finally addressed the rumours surrounding his religion after social media posts claimed he had converted to Islam. The speculation started after his marriage to Moroccan businesswoman Souheila Tahiri, with several photos from the celebrations showing elements linked to Islamic and Moroccan traditions. Some reports even claimed the former Real Madrid defender had recited the shahada in front of Brazilian religious figure Sheikh Jihad Hamada a few weeks earlier. However, Carlos has now stepped in to clear things up and said those claims are not true.

He Says His Religion Has Not Changed

Speaking to Saudi newspaper Okaz, Carlos said he has a lot of respect for Islam and enjoys seeing his wife practise her faith, but stressed that he has not converted. He also explained that the couple held more than one type of wedding celebration to honour the different backgrounds of their families and friends. One event reflected the Catholic traditions of Carlos’ side, while another included Moroccan and Islamic customs for Souheila and her loved ones. According to Carlos, taking part in those traditions should not be seen as proof that he had changed his own religion.

Their Story Started Through Football Business

Carlos also shared that he first met Souheila through a business meeting connected to football. What started as a professional relationship slowly became something more personal over the last two years. Their marriage has since attracted plenty of attention in both Brazil and Morocco, especially because of the different cultural and religious backgrounds involved. For Carlos, though, the message is pretty straightforward: he respects his wife’s faith, he is happy to celebrate her traditions, but the rumours that he converted to Islam are simply not true.
