Woman Charged In S$1 Million Kidnapping Case Tells Reporters, ‘Never Seen A Pretty Woman Before?’

A ransom of S$1 million, equivalent to around RM3.21 million, was demanded from his family. Malaysian and Singaporean police subsequently coordinated efforts to locate Quek before he was rescued on 7 August. During a raid at a residence in Kedah, two foreign nationals were shot dead, six others were detained and two suspects remained at large.

Four people appeared at the Balik Pulau Magistrate’s Court for the formal reading of kidnapping charges, with all four pleading not guilty and being denied bail. One of them was identified as 24-year-old Chinese national Guan Si Qi. As police escorted the accused from court, they reportedly kept their heads down and attempted to hide their faces from cameras. According to Sin Chew Daily, Guan eventually turned towards reporters and questioned why they were taking so many photographs, before asking whether they had never seen a “pretty woman” before. She then continued avoiding the cameras as officers escorted her towards a waiting vehicle.

Malaysian police said the syndicate allegedly used social media and other online platforms to identify potential victims. Members would then approach their targets using different pretexts, including invitations for holidays, job opportunities and social meetups. In Quek’s case, the investigation ultimately led to a cross-border operation involving Malaysian and Singaporean authorities. However, the criminal proceedings against the four people charged in connection with his kidnapping are still ongoing. Their not-guilty pleas mean the allegations against them have not been proven in court, while the available report states that two other suspects linked to the case remain at large.
