Blue Tears Light Up Kuantan Beach At Night, Leaving Visitors In Awe
Blue Tears Draw Crowds To Pantai Tembeling
Nature has once again captured the attention of Malaysians after the stunning Blue Tears phenomenon appeared at Pantai Tembeling in Kuantan. Videos of the glowing blue shoreline quickly went viral on social media, with many amazed by the rare sight. According to BERNAMA, the beach has attracted a steady stream of visitors over the past few days, with people of all ages stopping by to witness the phenomenon for themselves while taking photos and videos.
What Causes The Blue Glow?
According to BERNAMA, Blue Tears are caused by a natural phenomenon known as bioluminescence, where certain marine organisms produce light through biochemical reactions. Associate Professor Dr Nina Suhaity Azmi, a biotechnology and biochemistry expert, explained that the phenomenon usually occurs when there is a temporary increase in the population of light-producing marine organisms known as dinoflagellates. The lecturer from the Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) said factors such as water temperature, nutrient levels, ocean currents, tides and overall sea conditions all play a role. She added that while many marine organisms are capable of producing light, the exact species responsible for the Blue Tears at Pantai Tembeling can only be confirmed through seawater sampling and laboratory analysis by researchers.
A Natural Phenomenon Seen Across Malaysia
Dr Nina Suhaity said similar Blue Tears sightings have previously been reported in Kuala Selangor, Pulau Pangkor, Langkawi and several islands along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. However, the phenomenon does not occur all year round as it depends on environmental conditions, and different locations may involve different species of plankton. She also explained that the blue-green glow is produced when large populations of these organisms are disturbed by waves, splashes or movement in the water through a reaction involving luciferin and the enzyme luciferase. The light is not caused by moonlight or pollution, but is a natural biological process believed to help protect the organisms from predators. Although the glowing waters are generally harmless to humans, she stressed that bioluminescence should not be confused with Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB). The appearance of Blue Tears alone does not indicate whether the water is safe or dangerous, and unusual events such as fish deaths or foul-smelling water should still be investigated.
