Bondi Beach Terror Attack Kills 15 Including Child, Australia in Shock

Australia Shaken by Deadly Terror Attack at Bondi Beach

Australia is in mourning after a mass shooting at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach killed 15 people, including a 10 year old child. Authorities have confirmed the attack as an act of terrorism and described it as the worst mass shooting in the country in nearly three decades.

The incident took place on Sunday evening and has left the nation reeling, transforming a place once associated with leisure and celebration into a scene of tragedy.

Father and Son Identified as Alleged Shooters

Police have identified the alleged attackers as father and son, Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24. Sajid Akram was shot dead by police at the scene, while his son was critically injured and taken to hospital under armed guard.

New South Wales Police confirmed that 14 people died at the scene, with two more later succumbing to injuries in hospital. Forty others were injured, some critically.

Victims ranged in age from 10 to 87 years old.

Attack Deliberately Targeted Jewish Community

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting as “an act of pure evil” and confirmed that the attack deliberately targeted the Jewish community on the first day of Hanukah.

He said Bondi Beach would forever be marked by the tragedy and pledged full government support to combat antisemitism.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns echoed the sentiment, stating there would be zero tolerance for antisemitism or racial hatred in Australia.

Explosives Found, No Additional Shooters

Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that no third shooter was involved. Investigators recovered six licensed firearms and two active but basic explosive devices at the scene, which were safely neutralised.

Authorities revealed that the older suspect had legally held a firearms licence for around 10 years. Both suspects were staying in Campsie at the time, though their registered residence was in Bonnyrigg.

Emergency Response and Community Support

More than 300 police officers were deployed across suburbs with significant Jewish populations under Operation Shelter. Paramedics and first responders were praised for their bravery, including civilians who intervened to help victims and disarm one of the attackers.

NSW Health confirmed that most of the injured are now in stable condition, while several remain critical. Blood donation appeals were issued as hospitals managed the influx of casualties.

National Mourning and Calls for Reform

The attack has reignited calls for stricter gun control laws, with Premier Minns stating that legislative reform is almost certain.

Leaders from both sides of politics visited the site, while Jewish leaders warned that unchecked antisemitism had escalated into violence.

Among the victims were Rabbi Eli Schlanger, assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi, a Holocaust survivor, and an Israeli citizen.
