Canva Restructures 22% Of Its Workforce, Offers 6 Months’ Pay And Free MacBooks To Departing Staff

Canva has announced a major workforce restructuring affecting 1,271 employees, representing 22% of its global workforce. While some workers will be reassigned or asked to relocate, others will leave the company with severance packages worth at least six months' salary. The Australian design platform is also providing MacBooks, career support, healthcare benefits and potential startup grants.

Canva Restructuring Affects 1,271 Employees As Company Changes Direction

Australian design platform Canva has announced one of the biggest organisational changes in its 13-year history, affecting 1,271 employees, or approximately 22% of its global workforce. In a company-wide message published on 3 November, co-founder and CEO Melanie Perkins explained that Canva needed to simplify its operations after experiencing its first significant growth slowdown in a decade. However, the announcement does not mean all 1,271 employees are being laid off. Some will move into different roles or be asked to relocate, while others will leave the company. The restructuring will combine its Product, Growth and Platform divisions into a single organisation, with more product teams based in Sydney.

For employees leaving Canva, the company has announced an extensive support package that includes at least six months’ salary, inclusive of statutory entitlements, regardless of location. Departing staff can also keep their company-issued MacBooks, receive 12 months of Canva Care assistance and access career coaching, interview preparation and a year of LinkedIn Premium. Healthcare coverage will continue for 12 months in countries where Canva currently provides it, while the company is removing the one-year equity vesting requirement for eligible recent hires. Canva has also introduced a Collective Fund offering US$10,000 grants, approximately RM40,510 as reported by SAYS, to departing employees interested in launching businesses or community projects, without taking an ownership stake in their ventures.

Canva Says Restructuring Is Not About Replacing Workers With AI

Despite growing concerns about artificial intelligence replacing jobs in the technology sector, Canva has clarified that its restructuring is not being driven by plans to replace employees with AI. Instead, the company says it wants smaller teams with broader responsibilities, fewer management layers and closer collaboration between departments. Sydney will become a central location for more product-related roles, while most hybrid employees will be expected to work from an office approximately two to three days per week beginning January 2027. Perkins acknowledged the disruption caused by the changes and said the company would prioritise supporting affected employees through the transition.
