A TikTok video by a Western chef with the account @Girlandthekitchen recently caught the attention of many, especially Malaysians, after showcasing a unique way of cooking rice that Southeast Asians deemed “wrong.”
In the video, the chef claimed that most people cook rice incorrectly. He then demonstrated his technique, which involved adding salt to boiling water, putting in the rice, rinsing it after cooking, and then adding butter.
“When the rice is cooked, rinse it with water and add butter. This is perfect rice,” he said in the video.
However, this approach clearly did not sit well with Malaysians. Many criticized his method, saying it violated long-standing rice-cooking traditions in Asia.
“Cooking rice is so simple! But he makes it look complicated. Didn’t wash the rice first? That’s the basics!” one netizen commented.
Some felt that the chef’s actions disrespected Southeast Asia’s rice-cooking traditions. “Your method is embarrassing. It’s like insulting our ancestors!” another user remarked.
Netizens also questioned the lack of seasoning and flavor in the chef’s cooked rice. Some suggested that the chef should visit Malaysia to learn the proper way to cook rice, especially using a rice cooker, which is easier and more efficient.
Lessons from the Controversy
This controversy highlights cultural differences in cooking practices. While every country has its own methods, respecting the traditions and culinary practices of a community is important. Perhaps the chef could refine his technique by drawing inspiration from authentic Southeast Asian cooking!
