Recently, a Chinese woman and her daughter faced criticism for not being able to speak Malay at the immigration office in UTC Johor on November 27, 2023. The woman shared her experience on Facebook, describing how they were scolded by immigration officers.
She explained that both she and her daughter, though Malaysians, had studied in Singapore and were more comfortable with English. When they used English at the immigration office, the male officer scolded them, insisting they speak Malay, emphasizing that they were in Malaysia.
Despite the woman’s attempts to explain their situation, the officer continued scolding them and questioned their Malaysian identity. The officer even suggested they contemplate becoming Singaporeans if they couldn’t speak Malay
Feeling helpless, the woman apologized and asked for assistance in a gentle manner. The officer reluctantly gave them a number. Later, a female officer treated them similarly, reprimanding the daughter for not speaking Malay and demanding unnecessary documents for passport renewal.
The woman expressed disappointment and advised others who face similar situations to bring someone who speaks Malay. Eventually, with the help of a friend from the Immigration Department, they successfully renewed the passport.
The woman’s Facebook post received mixed reactions from netizens, with some sympathizing with her and others criticizing her language skills. The incident sparked a debate about language discrimination and cultural understanding.
