A street food vendor in Puchong, Selangor, is facing criticism after a customer discovered a cigarette butt in their curry puff. The incident has sparked outrage, raising serious concerns about food safety and hygiene practices at the local food stall.

Customer’s Shocking Discovery
The customer, who wished to remain anonymous, confronted the vendor after finding the cigarette butt mixed with the filling of the curry puff. Instead of addressing the issue thoroughly, the vendor simply offered a refund of RM3, which the customer deemed insufficient.

Health Risks and Accountability
In a statement to China Press, the customer questioned the quality and safety of the food being sold: “How did a cigarette butt end up in the curry puff? Could the ingredients have come from unsanitary sources?” The customer also raised concerns about whether other food items from the stall might be contaminated, criticizing the lack of responsibility shown by the vendor.

A Call for Stricter Food Safety Measures
The incident highlights broader issues of food hygiene among roadside vendors. The customer stressed the need for stronger regulations and monitoring of food businesses to prevent similar incidents. They emphasized that vendors who neglect hygiene should face strict penalties.

Reporting Food Safety Concerns
Consumers are encouraged to report any food safety concerns to local authorities, such as the Public Complaints Management System or the Health Ministry’s Food Safety and Quality Programme (PKKM). Last year alone, the Health Ministry received over 700 complaints about food hygiene across the country, showing a continued focus on improving food safety.
