A popular China-based cosmetics brand, registered in Malaysia under a local company, is now under scrutiny by the Ministry of Health (MOH) after it was found promoting its acid-based facial serum as an edible product. The brand, which markets a blood-red peeling solution for facial use, claimed on social media that the product could be safely consumed.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad confirmed that MOH has flagged the brand for potential violations of Malaysian law. The National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has issued a formal notice to the company demanding an explanation. The company has until 14 February to respond; failure to do so may result in the revocation of its license to sell products in Malaysia.

One of the advertisements, which went viral, featured a Malaysian woman pouring the serum into her mouth while promoting its benefits for achieving “glass-like skin.” However, a recent check confirmed that the controversial ads have since been removed from social media.

Dr Dzulkefly emphasized that such marketing tactics are not only misleading but could also pose a significant health risk to consumers. Social media users quickly expressed outrage, with many calling for a boycott of the brand. Comments flooded the online space, with netizens branding the campaign as “stupid,” “misleading,” and even a “choking hazard.”

Adding to the controversy, some individuals in the brand’s advertisements were seen wearing white lab coats, similar to those worn by medical professionals, which falsely implied a professional endorsement. According to Malaysia’s Guidelines for Cosmetic Advertisement, such marketing practices are prohibited as they mislead consumers into believing the product has been medically approved. The company now faces serious consequences if it fails to clarify its stance by the deadline. Meanwhile, public scrutiny over misleading marketing claims in the beauty industry continues to grow.
