A 13-year-old boy is now in custody after an incident in Sungai Petani, Kedah, where he attempted to stab an elderly e-hailing driver with a 25cm-long knife.
According to a report by Sinar Harian on November 27 at approximately 5:43 pm, the elderly driver received an order to pick up the young suspect from Taman Keladi to Bandar Sri Astana. The entire event was captured in a one-minute-and-33-second dashcam video. In the footage, the frustrated e-hailing driver can be heard expressing his displeasure at having circled around town for an hour, cautioning the boy about mischief and asserting that he is not the boy’s father.
As the vehicle comes to a stop and the driver reaches into his pocket to retrieve money, the boy brandishes the knife, attempting to stab the elderly man. Fortunately, the knife strikes the driver’s seatbelt, preventing a potentially fatal injury. In response, the elderly man reacts swiftly, grabbing the boy’s hand and biting it before the suspect manages to escape after the failed attempt.
At the time of this report, the dashcam video has garnered over 1.5 million views on X (formerly known as Twitter), leaving many netizens shocked that such a young boy would engage in such a serious crime. The Kuala Muda district police chief, ACP Zaidy Che Hassan, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended at around 10 pm on the same day, just two hours after the e-hailing driver filed a police report.
According to Zaidy, the suspect requested RM50 from the driver to pay his house rent during the e-hailing ride. When the driver insisted on dropping him off at a certain location due to lack of funds, the situation escalated. Upon reaching Bandar Sri Astana, the boy requested a return trip to Taman Keladi, leading to a dispute over a fare payment of RM18. As the journey continued, the boy attempted to divert the route through narrow lanes. The driver asked for an additional RM9 due to the extra distance traveled. The passenger handed over RM20, but when the driver attempted to return the change, the boy unsheathed the knife, stabbing at the elderly man’s left chest before trying to grab money from his pocket.
The driver managed to seize the knife, biting the boy’s hand in self-defense, prompting the suspect to flee the scene. Thankfully, the elderly e-hailing driver emerged unharmed. Authorities explained that the suspect’s aggressive behavior stemmed from anger at being scolded by the e-hailing driver and asked to pay the fare. The police have confiscated the 25cm-long knife used in the incident, and investigations are ongoing under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery, as reported by Sinar Harian.
