Malaysian Deepavali Kolam Breaks ASEAN Record, Gets Destroyed In Seconds
10-Hour Effort, 180 People, Multicultural Unity
Malaysian YouTuber Ccwhyao brought together more than 180 individuals from eight different ethnicities to create a massive Deepavali kolam that broke the ASEAN record.
The 10-hour collaborative effort took place at MyTOWN Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur and was meant to showcase Malaysia’s cultural harmony.
Wiped Out By A Child In Mere Seconds
Just as the team celebrated the accomplishment, disaster struck. A child ran over the kolam, instantly ruining a significant portion of the delicate artwork.
“I was really angry at that moment,” Ccwhyao said in his video, clearly frustrated as he watched the sand art — which took days of planning and a full-day effort — fall apart within seconds.
The video shows vibrant patterns being reduced to scattered colored sand across the floor.
The Unexpected Hero: “Kolam Guardian God”
Thankfully, a security guard at MyTOWN stepped in as an unexpected hero. He was later nicknamed the “Kolam Guardian God” by netizens.
The guard acted swiftly to fix the damage and stood by the kolam to prevent further incidents.
“This security guy is a real pro,” one netizen commented, while others criticized the lack of proper barricades around such a fragile artwork.
A Community That Came Together
Even more inspiring than the record-breaking achievement was how quickly the community rallied to restore the artwork.
Ccwhyao revealed that the entire project had been organized in just one week, highlighting the unity and passion among the participants.
The kolam, now restored, remains on display at MyTOWN until 26 October with increased security presence.
Despite the hiccup, the project successfully delivered its core message: celebrating Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity through unity, one grain of colored sand at a time.
