“Looks Bizarre” – Young People in China Follow ‘Eating Plastic’ Weight Loss Trend
Viral ‘Eating Plastic’ Trend Gains Attention

The eating plastic trend China has sparked concern after videos surfaced showing young individuals placing a sheet of plastic into their mouths before eating.
In several TikTok compilation clips, participants are seen chewing food with plastic in their mouths before removing and spitting it out. The routine is claimed to trick the brain into feeling as though food has been consumed, even though it is later discarded.
Claims of Appetite Control
Some individuals allege that this method helps suppress appetite and creates a sense of fullness without actually swallowing food.
Others claim it prevents sudden weight gain compared to eating normally. Despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness, the trend has gained traction online.

According to international outlet Moneycontrol, Dr Sunil Rana, Director and Head of Internal Medicine Unit III at Hospital Asia, warned that the trend is dangerous and increases the risk of choking.
“Plastic cannot be digested by the human body. If someone accidentally swallows plastic, it can cause blockage in the stomach or intestines and may lead to infection.
“Additionally, plastic can release toxic chemicals into the body, potentially affecting the liver, brain and hormonal system,” he said.
He explained that societal pressure surrounding body image may influence young people to attempt unsafe methods in pursuit of weight loss.
Netizens React to the Trend
On X, many users described the trend as irrational and harmful.
“Merepek. Kalau takut obesiti, kawal nutrisi dan tabiat makan, seimbangkan dengan senaman secara berkala dan kekal disiplin. Buat perkara macam ni hanya nampak pelik,” wrote one user.
“Jadi, mereka ni bukan saja membazir makanan, tapi dapat sekali mikroplastik ke?” another user questioned.
“Tolong jangan share (video) ni. Perempuan muda akan mula terikut untuk kurangkan berat. Ni hanyalah salah satu versi bulimia,” said another commenter.
