Foodpanda Is Shutting Down In Thailand After 13 Years — Here’s Why It Couldn’t Survive

After more than a decade of navigating the busy food delivery landscape in Thailand, foodpanda has officially thrown in the towel.

Come 23 May 2025, the company will cease its operations in Thailand, ending 13 years of service that once brought everything from bubble tea to pad Thai directly to doorsteps.

The closure, confirmed by parent company Delivery Hero, is part of a broader strategy to realign resources towards more profitable regions in the Asia-Pacific market.

13 Years, 13 Billion Baht in Losses

Despite its longevity, foodpanda never turned a profit in Thailand. According to Bangkok Post, the company has accumulated losses of over 13 billion baht (~RM1.7 billion) during its run in the country.

A farewell message to its riders reads:

“We regret to inform you that we have made the difficult decision to cease operations of the foodpanda platform for food and goods delivery in Thailand, effective 23 May 2025. Thank you for the wonderful times we’ve shared.”

Losing Out to Local Competition

foodpanda’s struggle wasn’t just about losses — it was also about fierce competition. The Thai market is dominated by Lineman Wongnai (44%) and GrabFood (39.4%), while foodpanda trails behind with a market share under 15%.

Last year, Delivery Hero tried selling off its Thai operations but couldn’t secure a buyer, which may have pushed the company to finally pull the plug.

What Happens Next?

While the delivery services will be discontinued, foodpanda’s regional team in Thailand will remain operational, supporting other Asia-Pacific markets in areas like marketing and HR.

foodpanda Thailand issued a statement thanking its customers, riders, and restaurant partners, acknowledging that current market conditions no longer aligned with its long-term vision.

This exit follows Delivery Hero’s earlier withdrawals from Denmark and Slovakia, signalling a company-wide consolidation to cut costs and boost performance where returns are more promising.
