The masked attacker who killed two officers and injured another in a bold assault at a Johor Bahru police station this morning, May 17, is suspected to have ties with the terror group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

JI, an Indonesia-based militant Islamist group formed in 1993 by Abu Bakar Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar, has a notorious history of bombings in the early 2000s. Although weakened, it still poses a threat with its cells in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

Malaysia, along with the United Nations, the European Union, and the US, has labeled JI as a terrorist organization.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that five family members of the deceased suspect, who was shot dead, have been detained to aid in the investigation into the brazen attack at the Ulu Tiram police station.

“The family members range from 15 to 62 years old,” Razarudin informed the media, adding that police also discovered several JI materials at the suspect’s residence.

In the wake of the attack, police have identified over 20 JI members in Johor.

The suspect, with no prior criminal record, made preparations before assaulting the police station at 2:45 a.m. today.

During the attack at the Ulu Tiram police station, two officers lost their lives, and another was wounded. The suspect was subsequently shot dead at the scene by other officers.

A Walther P99 pistol and an HK MP5 rifle were recovered from the assailant by the police.

Razarudin mentioned that the injured officer is currently in stable condition.

Additionally, two other individuals present at the Ulu Tiram police station have been arrested to aid in the investigation.

Security measures will be heightened at all police stations following this incident.
