Indian Vlogger Flies 5,000KM to Propose to Indonesian Woman, Only to Be Rejected
“Can you marry me?” he asked. Her reply? “No.”
A romantic gesture turned into an awkward heartbreak after an Indian vlogger flew over 5,000 kilometres to Indonesia to meet a woman he had befriended online — only to be swiftly rejected after a surprise marriage proposal.
According to reports, the man had been regularly communicating with the Indonesian woman through social media. Believing there was something special between them, he decided to visit her in person, assuming she would welcome the idea.
And she did — but not in the way he expected.
Upon finally meeting face-to-face, the vlogger pulled out an engagement ring and asked her a question straight from the heart:
“Can you marry me?”
At first, the woman appeared confused and didn’t quite understand what he meant. But once she realised he was proposing marriage, she gave a short, blunt answer:
“No.”
She Said No — Here’s Why
Despite the rejection, the vlogger accepted the outcome with grace and later shared that the woman had explained her reason: she could only marry someone from her own tribe.
It was then revealed that the woman is a member of the Baduy ethnic group in Indonesia, a rare and culturally unique tribe with deep-rooted traditions.
Online users expressed sympathy for the Indian man, with many reminding him to be more realistic in matters of love. Some criticised his decision to propose based solely on a digital connection, especially when he had only just met the woman in person.
Who Are the Baduy?
Commenters pointed out that the woman is from the Baduy Luar (Outer Baduy), a subgroup of the Baduy people who are slightly more open to the outside world and modern influences. In contrast, the Baduy Dalam (Inner Baduy) remain strictly isolated from the modern world, with little to no interaction through technology or social media.
Regardless, both groups uphold strict cultural traditions, especially when it comes to marriage — making it nearly impossible for outsiders to marry into their community.
The story, although unfortunate, serves as a reminder that love may be universal, but culture, tradition, and realism matter just as much — especially when you’ve only just met through a screen.
