Linus Tech Tips Visits Low Yat Plaza, Gets Overcharged for HDMI Adapter
During a personal vacation in Malaysia, Linus discovered his hotel was just a ten-minute walk from the iconic tech mall. Although he initially didn’t plan to visit, he had to make the trip after realizing his hotel TV lacked a proper HDMI input for his Asus ROG Ally handheld gaming device.
Plaza Low Yat — Malaysia’s premier destination for tech enthusiasts — didn’t disappoint. With six stories of gadgets, accessories, and custom PC components, Linus described it as “glorious” but admittedly overwhelming due to the sheer number of specialty stores.
In his YouTube video published on 15 April, Linus gave viewers a detailed look at what Low Yat has to offer — drones, microphones, laptops, phones, and niche tech components.
But the highlight of his visit came when he found the micro HDMI adapter he needed at Trillion Camera Sdn Bhd — only to be told the price was RM175.
“I don’t know whether that’s a convenience tax or a foreigner tax, but either way, I’m not paying that,” Linus remarked in the video.
Social media was quick to react, with some users jokingly dubbing the store “famous for all the wrong reasons.”
After browsing a few more shops, Linus finally purchased the adapter from Sri Computers Sdn Bhd, where staff were friendlier and prices far more reasonable.
He concluded his visit by praising the mall’s vibrant variety of offerings, reasonable pricing, and helpful vendors — many of whom happily directed him to competitors that had what he needed.
