Malaysia Blockchain Week Apologises After Ms. Puiyi Afterparty Promotion Sparks Backlash
Afterparty Promotion Draws Criticism
Malaysia Blockchain Week 2026 has come under fire ahead of its opening after an afterparty promotion featuring influencer Ms. Puiyi sparked backlash on social media. Although the original promotional post has since been removed, it advertised Ms. Puiyi as a guest at the post-event afterparty. The promotion was later highlighted by local tech and investment Facebook page Bicara Krypto, which questioned the decision given that the event is supported by the Ministry of Digital and other government agencies, with Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo also appearing in its promotional materials.
Organisers Issue Public Apology
Following the criticism, Malaysia Blockchain Week organisers released an official statement apologising for the controversy. They confirmed that all promotional materials related to the afterparty had been removed and stressed that neither the Ministry of Digital nor the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) was involved in organising the afterparty or selecting its guest list. The organisers accepted full responsibility for the incident and said they are strengthening their internal approval process to prevent similar situations in the future. They also confirmed that the main conference will proceed as scheduled.
Conference To Continue As Planned
Malaysia Blockchain Week, first launched in 2024, is Malaysia’s flagship Web3 conference focused on blockchain, decentralised infrastructure and artificial intelligence. The event is supported by the Ministry of Digital as part of efforts to encourage real-world adoption of blockchain and AI technologies. The controversy has sparked mixed reactions online, with some questioning the suitability of the afterparty guest while others viewed it as a marketing misstep. The conference is scheduled to begin on 29 July.
