Social media platform Tokyo Tweet uploaded a video of the incident on X, showing the suspect rummaging through a bag placed near the basketball court.
According to local media reports, the police confirmed that the man had disguised himself as a local resident to gain access to the basketball club.
“The man involved has been identified as Wong Ka Fei (26), a Malaysian national working as a part-time elementary school teacher. He was arrested on suspicion of stealing credit cards and cash. He had disguised himself as a local resident to enter the club for the first time,” said a police spokesperson.
Victims Lost Cash and Credit Cards
One of the club members who fell victim to the theft reported losing a credit card and several thousand yen in cash during the incident.
“The total loss is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of yen, including both cash and stolen credit cards,” the police added.
After being detained, Wong admitted to stealing several credit cards but denied any knowledge of the missing cash reported by the victim.
Suspected of Involvement in Other Cases
The police further stated that similar incidents had been reported in Takatsuki, and they are now investigating whether Wong was involved in other related cases.

“This kind of thing is common among foreigners here. It’s time for the government to take serious measures to deal with them,” wrote one user.
