Missed Transport Causes Chaos During Malaysian Rescue Mission in Songkhla

Songkhla Declared Danger Zone, Malaysian Tourists Stranded

Severe flooding in Thailand has left many Malaysian tourists stranded, especially in Songkhla where 16 areas have been officially declared danger zones. Continuous heavy rain has caused rapid water level rises and blocked access routes across the city.

The Malaysian Consulate in Songkhla has been working around the clock to evacuate stranded Malaysians from several hotels.

Consulate Reveals Real Issue Behind Rescue Delays

A local individual who has been updating the situation shared new information from the Malaysian Consulate. According to them, the biggest problem was not the rising floodwater but travellers who ended up missing the rescue vehicles that had already been scheduled.

Rescue teams reportedly made multiple trips throughout the day to 14 designated hotels, and all travellers had been informed earlier to wait in the lobby. Despite this, some still missed the transport and became stranded again when flood levels rose the next morning.

Some Travellers Chose to Stay in Their Rooms

The update also revealed that a number of Malaysian travellers refused to come down when the Consulate team arrived, insisting on staying inside their rooms, which resulted in them being left behind.

There were also travellers who declined the Consulate’s help because they believed the water had receded and had arranged separate transportation with third parties.

Clear Instructions Led to Successful Evacuations

Notices were sent to all affected travellers instructing them to stay ready in the hotel lobby. Those who followed the instructions were successfully evacuated to safer areas without complications.

Malaysian NGOs Travel to Hatyai to Assist

Several Malaysian NGOs travelled to Hatyai to help move stranded Malaysians to safety or assist them in crossing the border. The teams working directly with the Consulate include:

  1. Adli Murtaza – Truck Towing Team Perlis

  2. Mr. Leong – Sg Petani Volunteer Firefighters (Sadao)

  3. Mr. Chiang – Sg Petani Volunteer Firefighters (Hatyai)

  4. Mr. Calvin – Chief of Sg Petani Volunteer Firefighters
