With the current hot weather, schools are taking extra steps to make sure children can cope with the heat. However, a recent incident has raised concerns about student safety.

A Standard 5 student was rushed to the hospital after allegedly being punished by his teacher, who made him stand in a sunny field for more than two hours. The incident happened on April 30, from 10 am to 12:50 pm.

The boy’s mother, Mogahana, 35, explained that the punishment was given after her son complained to the teacher about being beaten by another student. Instead of addressing the issue, the teacher allegedly made her son and his friends stand outside in the sun.

“My child told me that he reported another student beating him, but the teacher punished him by making him stand in the field,” Mogahana said. “He told the teacher he felt faint, but she ignored him.”

When Mogahana picked up her son from school, she noticed he was very weak and had lost his appetite. “After a while, he asked me to take him to the hospital. He fainted just as we arrived,” she added.

Doctors diagnosed the boy with heat exhaustion. Ampang Jaya district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail, confirmed the diagnosis with the hospital.

Mogahana expressed her dissatisfaction with the teacher’s actions, not because she opposes punishment, but because the method used was too extreme and impacted her son’s health. She called on the authorities and the Ministry of Education to investigate the incident.

Meanwhile, the police said the 37-year-old teacher claimed she only made the students stand for 10 minutes. The investigation paper has been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, and the case is being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

Even adults would struggle to stand in the sun for long periods these days. What do you think about this situation? Share your thoughts with us.
