National Songkran Festival Returns: 3-Day Water Celebration to Be Held in Perak This April

For fans of Thailand’s vibrant Songkran Festival, there’s now a local alternative that promises all the fun — without the need for a passport.

The National Songkran Festival 2024 will take place over three days, from April 11 to 13, in Perak, specifically at Dewan Songkran Kampung Tasek in Pengkalan Hulu.

The event is jointly organised by the Ministry of Unity in collaboration with the Siamese Association Malaysia, and aims to promote cultural understanding and unity among Malaysians. According to Minister of Unity, Aaron Ago Dagang, this festival is in line with the MADANI government’s mission to celebrate the nation’s rich cultural, racial, and religious diversity.

“This is more than a celebration. It’s a platform for Malaysians to appreciate Siamese heritage while fostering harmony through shared experiences,” said the Minister in a statement dated April 7.

And yes — there will be water splashing!

The Perak edition of the Songkran Festival is set to bring the same exhilarating energy you’d find on the streets of Bangkok or Chiang Mai during the Thai New Year. Visitors can expect a wide variety of activities, including:

Traditional Songkran procession and cultural parades

Live cultural performances and exhibitions

Traditional Siamese games and competitions

Authentic Thai food stalls

• And of course, water fights and splashing zones

Preparations are already underway, as shared by the Siamese Association Malaysia via Facebook on April 6. The post featured sneak peeks of the event space and the volunteers hard at work to get everything ready.

This isn’t the first time the Songkran Festival has been celebrated in Malaysia. In 2023, the celebration returned to Penang after being postponed for several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming Perak edition is expected to draw a large crowd, especially from surrounding areas and neighbouring states.

Members of the public — especially those living in Perak or planning a local getaway — are encouraged to join the celebration. For full details and the official schedule, the public can visit the Ministry of Unity’s official website.

Whether you’re a culture lover, a foodie, or just looking for a fun water fight, the Songkran Festival in Perak is the place to be this April.
