Once represented Malaysia in Germany and India — now Asmawi is seen wandering aimlessly in the capital. What really happened to him?
A video recently went viral on social media showing a man wandering barefoot around the city in what appeared to be a mentally unstable state, prompting public concern and sympathy.
The man has been identified as Mohamad Asmawi Zaidi, once a rising star in Malaysian hockey. He previously wore the national jersey for the Malaysian Under-16 team and represented the country in international tournaments in Germany, India, and Pakistan.
Asmawi began playing hockey at the age of 12 and made a name for himself at the national level. He was even part of the national squad during the 2009 Junior World Cup hosted in Johor Bahru.
Confirming his identity, a former teammate who played alongside Asmawi during the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and studied with him at the Bandar Penawar Sports School (now Tunku Ismail Sports School – SSTMI) expressed deep sadness over his current condition.
“It’s true — the man seen in the video is Asmawi. We played together for Terengganu and represented Malaysia abroad. He used to be cheerful and very talented,” he said.
The former teammate also mentioned that life pressures may have contributed to Asmawi’s drastic change.
Reportedly now aged 36, Asmawi left the world of hockey around age 25 to return to his hometown.
His friend added that this isn’t the first time Asmawi has faced mental health issues. About five years ago, he received treatment and showed signs of recovery for a while.
Unfortunately, his condition has worsened again. Friends and the public are now urging authorities to step in and help this former national athlete before things take a tragic turn.
