Robert Downey Jr. is making a triumphant return to the Marvel universe, this time as Doctor Victor Von Doom in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday.”

According to The Wrap, this surprising announcement was made during Marvel’s Hall H panel at Comic-Con on Saturday.

The Russo Brothers, known for directing iconic films like “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “Avengers: Endgame,” will be back to helm “Avengers: Doomsday” as well as its sequel “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

While introducing Robert Downey Jr. at Comic-Con, Joe and Anthony Russo emphasized the crucial role Doctor Doom will play in “Secret Wars.”

Joe Russo stated, “There is one character essential to doing justice to ‘Secret Wars’… perhaps the most important character in the entire Marvel universe.”

He added, “If we are to bring Victor Von Doom to theaters worldwide, we need the best actor in the world to portray him.”

Following this announcement, a group of men dressed in Doctor Doom robes and masks took to the stage, and Robert Downey Jr. eventually revealed himself.

With his trademark humor, he said, “New mask, same job. What can I say, I hate playing complex characters.”

Robert Downey Jr.’s return to Marvel comes after he won his first Oscar for his role in Christopher Nolan’s 2023 film “Oppenheimer.”

Previously, he bid farewell to his iconic Tony Stark character after more than a decade of anchoring the MCU, with Tony sacrificing himself to save the world in “Avengers: Endgame.”

However, the Tony Stark played by Downey remains dead in the original timeline.

The Doctor Doom character portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in “Doomsday” is expected to be a different variant—an alternate version of Tony Stark from another universe who chose a very different path.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
