In exciting news for fans, a third Princess Diaries movie has been officially confirmed by Anne Hathaway! The actress, who played Mia Thermopolis, took to her social media on Saturday, 5 October, to share the thrilling announcement with a cheeky nod to the original film.

Hathaway posted a clip featuring her and Julie Andrews’ iconic line, “Shut up!” and captioned it, “Miracles happen. Back to Genovia with Adele Lim, Disney, and Somewhere Pictures. The fairy tale continues.”

This time, Malaysian filmmaker Adele Lim, known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians and Joy Ride, will take the director’s chair, bringing new life to the much-loved franchise.

“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim shared with Variety. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenets of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

While the third movie won’t be a reboot, it will continue Mia’s royal story, following The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement.

Though it’s unclear if all the original cast members will return, many are eager to reprise their roles. Mandy Moore, Sandra Oh, Heather Matarazzo, and Hector Elizondo have all expressed interest in returning. Chris Pine, who played the charming Nicholas Deveraux, is also on standby, waiting for that call.

However, fans might be saddened to hear that Julie Andrews, who portrayed the elegant Queen Clarisse Renaldi, is unsure about reprising her role.

“I might just be a little bit too old a granny for it. I don’t know, it depends on the story,” Andrews said. But Hathaway remains determined: “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, we could make it work!”
