Putra Heights Tragedy: RM5,000 Aid Falls Short, Residents Urge Government to Reassess

The RM5,000 financial aid announced by the government for residents affected by the recent gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights is being slammed as insufficient. Many locals have expressed their frustration, saying the amount barely scratches the surface of the actual damage they’ve suffered—not just burnt-down homes, but also destroyed belongings, vehicles, and important documents lost in an instant.

Jali Masari, who has been living in the area since 2014, said that while the government’s gesture is appreciated, RM5,000 is simply not enough. He also hopes the claim process will be simplified without burdensome bureaucracy. Another resident, Steven, pointed out that even houses that didn’t catch fire still sustained damage worth more than the aid provided. He also questioned how a gas pipeline that had operated for years without issue could suddenly explode, raising serious concerns about public infrastructure safety.

The massive blaze destroyed 87 homes and affected a total of 235 premises. Steven, who is currently forced to stay with relatives in Puchong, added that besides financial assistance, residents urgently need support such as temporary housing, access to essential documents and medical supplies. Many are still waiting for clear answers from the authorities regarding the true cause of the explosion and a long-term recovery plan to help victims rebuild their lives.
