“Don’t Mess With Me!” – Malaysian Chef Disputes RM120 Roti Canai Bill

Viral Dispute Over Roti Canai Bill

A Malaysian chef recently made headlines after claiming he was charged RM120 for a simple meal of roti canai and beverages at a mamak restaurant in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.

In a TikTok video that quickly gained traction online, Chef Alam, a Chinese Muslim chef, expressed frustration over what he believed to be an inflated bill. He explained that he had also paid for his staff, who were seated at separate tables nearby.

Although he did not detail every single item ordered, he maintained that the bulk of the meal consisted of roti canai and drinks.

“Don’t Mess With Me” – Chef Demands Recalculation

According to Chef Alam, he initially handed over RM150 and was given RM30 in change, implying the total amounted to RM120. Feeling uneasy about the figure, he insisted that the bill be recalculated.

He claimed the restaurant did not display food prices clearly, which he argued could lead to confusion among customers. In the viral clip, he is seen raising his voice and questioning the cashier over the charges.

“You don’t even display price tags here. You’re charging me RM120 for just roti canai and beverages! What are you trying to pull here?” he shouted.

After nearly an hour of waiting, the bill was reportedly reviewed again and reduced to around RM70, significantly lower than the initial amount. During the exchange, a Royal Malaysia Police officer was present at the location.

Authorities Step In

Following the online backlash, the Negeri Sembilan branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living conducted an inspection of the restaurant.

State director Muhammad Zahir Mazlan clarified that price tags were indeed displayed in accordance with legal requirements. Officials also confirmed that receipts were issued for transactions and that the pricing recorded in the system matched what was shown on the menu.

However, despite these findings, the authorities issued a Goods Information Verification Notice regarding the pricing of specific items, including roti canai and roti telur. The restaurant has been given four working days to submit an explanation.
