Selangor Mulls Ban on Foreign Cooks at Hawker Stalls – Too Little, Too Late?

Source: World Of Buzz

The Selangor State Government is thinking about banning foreign workers from being the main cooks at hawker stalls. This move is meant to stop foreigners from running these stalls without proper permission.

Challenges in Enforcing the Ban

Datuk Ng Suee Lim, the Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman, said that enforcing such a rule might be tough due to Selangor’s large population.

Following Penang’s Lead?

Ng brought this up in the Selangor Legislative Assembly after Rawang assemblyperson Chua Wei Kiat asked if Selangor would follow Penang’s example. Penang already has a rule barring foreigners from being main cooks at hawker stalls, reserving those jobs for locals.

Ng agreed that Penang’s measure is a good one and said Selangor would talk to Penang to see how they implemented the rule. If it suits Selangor’s situation, they might introduce a similar policy.

Population Woes

However, Ng emphasized that it might be difficult to enforce this policy in Selangor due to its large area and over 7 million residents. He also mentioned potential protests from stall operators if such a policy is put in place.

What’s Next?

Ng said, “There will be protests from stall operators when we implement such a policy. Therefore, we will review this proposal and consult with the Penang government on the implementation.”
