Sure, everyone knows the song “Puteri” sung by Datuk Zainal Abidin; it’s super popular. But there’s a funny story not many know behind that song.

Recently, the 64-year-old singer spilled the beans that the song “Puteri,” recorded in 2004, was once a battleground between him and the international superstar, Celine Dion.

In an interview, Zainal shared that the song caught Celine’s attention, but Warner Music Malaysia quickly paid up to secure the rights before she could.

“The song had already been bought and reserved, but Celine Dion hadn’t paid yet. In English, the song is called ‘Heart Don’t Lie.’

“The song was already in their stash, so Warner Music Malaysia and I paid for it and turned it into the ‘Puteri’ song that I sang,” said Zainal.

Zainal added that after he recorded the song, Celine contacted him, and there was a little quarrel, but they sorted it out nicely.

“When I recorded this song and Celine Dion heard it, she got angry. She called me from Canada directly, saying she wanted to take back the song. A little argument happened. I said, ‘This is no longer your song; it has been paid for and is now Warner Music Malaysia’s property.’

“So, there’s no issue with Celine Dion anymore. We became friends, occasionally exchanging messages to check on each other,” he said.

However, Zainal pointed out that the song couldn’t be contested in the country because the original creators of the song are not Malaysians.

“I forget who translated the lyrics, but the song can’t be contested because the songwriter, composer, and original owner of the song are not Malaysian citizens.

“But for me, the song has its own charm, with a catchy melody and fresh lyrics that perfectly suit the Malaysian market,” said Zainal, laughing.
