Malaysia’s national track cyclist, Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom, faced a heartbreaking moment at the Paris Olympics today, 11 August, when he narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the men’s keirin finals.

The 28-year-old was up against tough competition, including Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands, Australia’s Matthew Richardson and Matthew Glaetzer, Great Britain’s Jack Carlin, and Japan’s Shinji Nakano.

While Shah Firdaus was gunning for third place, things took a turn when Nakano collided with him, leading to Carlin, who was trailing behind, crashing into both of them.

The collision sent all three riders tumbling to the ground. Despite the setback, Shah Firdaus managed to get back on his bike and finish the race, but Carlin and Nakano were unable to continue.

Even though Shah Firdaus crossed the finish line, he was relegated to the sixth position, dashing his hopes of securing a medal.

Lavreysen took home the gold, while Australia’s Richardson and Glaetzer claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Shah Firdaus was Malaysia’s last chance for a medal in the men’s keirin event, following Datuk Azizulhasni Awang’s unexpected disqualification earlier in the competition.

Azizulhasni had been Malaysia’s top hope for gold in Paris, having previously won silver and bronze in past Olympic Games.

With Shah Firdaus’ race concluding Malaysia’s Olympic journey, the nation ended the campaign with two bronze medals in badminton, earned by Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in men’s doubles and Lee Zii Jia in singles.
