Tourist Alleges KL Cops Extorted Him of $800, Vows Never to Return

A foreign tourist has claimed he was extorted by two police officers in Kuala Lumpur, leading him to swear off visiting Malaysia again. The tourist, who shared his experience on Reddit, alleged that the incident occurred near Pudu at 3am when he was stopped and searched by officers on patrol.
According to the viral post, the officers confiscated his phone and tablet, forcing him to unlock them. Upon finding an adult Telegram channel and a cryptocurrency exchange app, they accused him of money laundering and warned he could face a hefty $10,000 fine. The officers allegedly took him to an alley and demanded $400 each, totaling $800, before escorting him to his hotel to retrieve the money.
After complying, he said his belongings were returned, but the incident left him traumatized. He stated that although this was his third visit to Malaysia, the experience had “scarred” him permanently. However, he later visited the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, where he claimed he successfully recovered his money and even confronted the officers involved.
