Tourist Slams KL Walkways: “Breaking the Rules Is Easier Than Walking Here”

Kuala Lumpur, often celebrated for its skyline and modern development, is now facing harsh criticism from a foreign visitor — not for its skyscrapers or food, but for its sidewalks.
A viral video featuring a Western tourist expressing his frustration over the city’s lack of walkable pedestrian infrastructure has sparked widespread attention. Initially praising Malaysia for its vibrancy, the tourist quickly shifted his focus to what he described as a major problem for both locals and tourists: the difficulty of simply walking around.
“I noticed hardly anyone walks in KL. You have to run. Cars rule everything here,” he remarked, reflecting on the city’s heavy dependence on motor vehicles.
In his candid observation, he pointed out that even traffic penalties appear ineffective. He was surprised to learn that drivers who park illegally can delay paying their fines until discounts are offered — and often face no additional consequences for doing so. This, he said, weakens the impact of enforcement and encourages continued rule-breaking.
Frustrated, he jokingly added that in Kuala Lumpur, he might end up fined for simply walking outside a designated path — a sarcastic jab at how unaccommodating the city feels to pedestrians.
His most biting remark? “It’s easier to break the rules than to walk on a sidewalk here.”
The video struck a chord with many Malaysian netizens, who admitted they’ve faced the same issues for years. Several commenters thanked the tourist for speaking up, hoping that his viral message might finally spark change at a policy level.
