Former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, a key figure in Malaysia’s economic development during the 80s and 90s, has passed away at the age of 86. According to news reports, his death was confirmed by his lawyer, Datuk Gurdial Singh Nijar, stating that Daim passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital.

Daim was born in Alor Setar, Kedah, and was widely recognized for his role as Finance Minister under Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s administration. He also served as a member of the Council of Eminent Persons when Dr Mahathir returned to office in 2018.

Daim’s name recently resurfaced on social media during a viral TikTok video discussing “old money” fashion. The video featured an influencer attempting to emulate the style associated with “old money,” and many social media users criticized the influencer, with some using Daim as a prime example of how the truly wealthy often prefer a more modest and understated style.

Daim, a successful businessman before venturing into politics, was known for his wealth, but his simple, unflashy style left a lasting impression. He had a significant impact not only on Malaysia’s economic policy but also on how wealth can be managed with humility.
