Victor, the official sportswear sponsor for national badminton ace Lee Zii Jia, recently faced backlash after an embarrassing mistake during the BWF World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, on 11 December. The controversy stemmed from the Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside-down on Lee’s jersey during his match.
In a statement released on social media platform X the same day, Victor extended an apology to Lee and Malaysian badminton fans. The company emphasised their regret, stating, “This mistake does not reflect our deep respect for Malaysia, its national symbols, or the pride of representing the nation on the international stage.”
The brand acknowledged the flag’s significance as a symbol of unity and identity and promised to conduct a comprehensive review to ensure such an oversight would not happen again.
The Incident:
During his match, Lee was seen wearing a jersey with the upside-down flag, sparking outrage online. Interestingly, a video captured Lee wearing a different jersey with the correctly displayed Jalur Gemilang earlier in the same match. The 26-year-old shuttler appeared unaware of the error on the second jersey, likely due to the ongoing match’s intensity.
Despite the uniform mishap, Lee Zii Jia remained focused and secured a convincing victory over Taiwan’s world No. 9 shuttler Chou Tien Chen, winning the Group A fixture 21-13, 21-15.
Victor’s mishap, however, overshadowed Lee’s triumph, with many fans voicing their frustration over the incident.
