A group of Malaysian students studying in the UK decided to recreate the nostalgic experience of enjoying ‘chap fan’ (mixed rice) in their dormitory.
Sharing their initiative on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, user 冰美式脑袋 expressed their longing for the familiar taste of home-cooked meals.
In the video, the user showcased how they and their friends prepared nine different dishes, mimicking the setup of a typical ‘chap fan’ stall where customers choose their desired dishes and rice before having the price calculated.
“You have to line up! Take rice, choose your dishes, then let aunty calculate the price! Handsome boys and pretty girls get a discount!” reads the humorous caption accompanying the video.
To add to the authenticity, one of the friends even took on the role of the ‘chap fan’ stall operator, playfully calculating the cost of a customer’s meal.
“Oh, you ah? Handsome boy, okay lah. Five ringgit only,” he jests while examining his friend’s plate of food.
The video garnered plenty of laughs, with many Malaysians commending the group for their accurate cooking and for using the iconic red plates commonly associated with ‘chap fan’ stalls.
“That looks so good! You guys can open a shop now,” remarked a Xiaohongshu user.
“The best part must be the red plates! When you have those plates, you definitely have those ‘chap fan’ store feels,” commented another.
