Muslim Customers Shocked After Discovering Popular Bakso Stall Sold Pork For Nearly A Decade

Muslim Customers Shocked By Bakso Stall’s Hidden Secret

Residents of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, were left stunned after discovering that a well-known bakso stall they had been visiting for nearly ten years was actually selling pork-based meatballs.

The revelation sparked anger among the local Muslim community after it was confirmed that the vendor had been operating for nine years without any indication that the food being sold was not halal, according to CNN Indonesia.

Dewan Masjid Indonesia Steps In

Recognizing the sensitivity of the issue, the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) immediately intervened. DMI’s secretary, Ahmad Bukhori, stated that the organization had installed warning banners at the stall to alert Muslim customers about the non-halal status of the food.

“We took this step as a sign of responsibility and concern so that Muslims in Yogyakarta do not accidentally buy or consume non-halal food,” he said.

Ahmad further explained that discussions regarding the issue began back in December 2024, after local residents voiced their growing concerns about the stall’s unclear food status.

The Stall Has Been Around Since The 1990s

What shocked many even more was the fact that the business wasn’t new. Investigations revealed that the vendor had been selling pork bakso since the 1990s, before relocating to its current Yogyakarta location in 2016.

Throughout those years, the seller never displayed any clear signs or notices to indicate that the meatballs contained pork. This left many loyal Muslim customers feeling deceived, as they had unknowingly eaten non-halal food for years.

Majority Of Customers Were Muslims

According to Ahmad Bukhori, most of the customers who regularly visited the stall were Muslims — including many women who wore hijabs and had no idea what they were eating.

“Many of the customers were Muslims, and they didn’t know the nature of the bakso,” he explained.

He added that some locals were actually aware the bakso contained pork but chose not to speak up, fearing it might lead to tension or conflict in the community.

DMI Confirms Meeting With The Stall Owner

Following the wave of complaints, DMI took further action earlier this year by meeting with the local village chief, community representatives, and the stall owner himself.

The goal was to ensure that the stall’s actual food status was made public and transparent, effectively ending the deception that had lasted nearly a decade.
